- Retinopathy of Prematurity. ROP is a condition that affects premature babies weighing less than 2 3/4 pounds at birth. ROP requires careful screening, follow-up and timely treatment. Experts agree that if properly managed, ROP rarely results in a child being blinded because of ROP. When a child ends up blind because of ROP, more often than not it is because the condition was mismanaged by the medical providers. Neonatal intensive care units are required to have policies in place to prevent these babies from missing critical eye exams. They are also required to employ a physician experienced and knowledgable about ROP, or transfer your baby to a facility that has the qualified personnel.
